"NICOLAS GUILLEN" SHOWROOM

The first oil canvases painted by Carlos Páez Vilaró on the urguayan "candombe" are exhibited in this room. They were
performed in the 50’s when he lived in the "Mediomundo" tenement housing at Palermo neighbourhood, Montevideo.

The masterpieces of the Museum are shown in this area. Amongst them you will be able to appreciate the original ceramics that Pablo Picasso gave to Carlos Páez Vilaró when they met in the south of France in 1957.

Souvenirs collected by the Artist during his trips to the African continent such as masks, lances and fetiches are kept in a large glass cabinet.

Every year the Artist together with his old drum goes down to Montevideo city to celebrate "Las Llamadas" (The Callings - Music and dance ceremony), embracing the people with the sound of the different battling drums and with flags where the black people use to meet in the old part of the city giving testimony and refreshing the memory of the town people on the legacy of the music and dances left by their ancestors.
